Snow—or no snow—Alaska Safe Riders (ASR) is gearing up to launch the winter season with a Member’s Only Weekend at Eureka Lodge, a gathering dedicated to building skills, strengthening community, and reinforcing the fundamentals of safe backcountry riding.
While early-season snowfall can be unpredictable, one thing remains constant: ASR’s commitment to winter fun and rider safety. Whether the ground is covered in deep powder or just beginning to transition into winter conditions, there is always value in connecting with your ride crew, brushing up on essential skills, and preparing for a safe and enjoyable season.
Why Backcountry Safety Practice Matters
When you head into the backcountry, the greatest safety tool you have isn’t your gear—it’s the people you ride with. A well-prepared, well-practiced ride crew is essential for navigating unpredictable terrain, responding to emergencies, and keeping the stoke high while the risks stay low.
Events like the Eureka Member’s Weekend give riders a chance to practice real-life safety habits in a low-pressure, community-centered environment. From group communication and beacon checks to terrain awareness and decision-making, these skills aren’t one-and-done lessons. They improve through repetition, shared experience, and honest conversations within your group.
Riding with people who know how to react under pressure, who understand their roles in an emergency, and who trust one another’s judgment can make all the difference. Practicing together not only sharpens individual skills but builds a ride crew that moves as a cohesive team.
A Weekend of Riding, Learning & Community
Throughout the weekend, members will enjoy group rides organized by skill level, ensuring that everyone—from brand-new riders to seasoned sledders—can experience a full day of skill-building and exploration.
A highlight of this year’s event is the Ladies-Only emPOWDERed Ride, led by instructors Angie and Sierra Winter. This session is designed specifically to help new and developing female riders build confidence, knowledge, and safe riding habits in a supportive environment.
Evening gatherings at the lodge bring everyone together for connection, laughs, and the popular Video Challenge, where riders showcase their favorite tip or trick from the day’s ride.
Snow or Not—We’re Riding
Alaskans know better than to let uncertain snowfall put adventures on hold. The Eureka Member’s Weekend will take place regardless of accumulation, with terrain options and activities adjusted as needed. Whether the weekend turns into early-season boondocking, trail miles, safety refreshers, or a mix of everything, ASR members can expect a full slate of winter fun.
Ready for Takeoff
With free registration for active members, discounted lodging at Eureka Roadhouse and Gunsight Mountain Lodge, and opportunities to learn from skilled and passionate riders, the Eureka Member’s Weekend is the perfect way to launch the season.
Winter is coming—slowly or quickly—but ASR will be out there, ready to ride safely, responsibly, and together. Learn more at www.alaskasaferiders.org
