My mom recently stumbled across this paper while sorting through old boxes and sent it to me. I wrote it during my freshman year of high school when I was just 14 years old. Reading it again nearly two decades later felt a little like opening a time capsule.

To OC — somewhere in nature, listening for me. Your birthday came in with the wind and left with the rain. Like the drops on the ground, tears fell with the pain. You are missed often, and not just by me. You are dearly missed throughout our community. I hear stories of you often from the people you met. I am thankful for them, because I will never forget. We left Alaska with ambition, excitement, and full-send energy. The plan was simple: chase snow. We left in January for a trip we planned for March, watching the conditions closely. When the snow in Alaska wasn’t cooperating and Canada started getting hammered, we said what any sledders would say — let’s hit the road.
